Winning Weekend for SpASpeed / ApexKartSports at United Karting Cup Karts East Opener

HANOVER, Md. — The SpASpeed racing team enjoyed a memorable weekend at the Cup Karts North America East Division opener May 3-5 at the unique United Karting-BWI barrier course next to the Baltimore-Washington International Airport.

Our team entered nine drivers in the highly anticipated regional event for Briggs 206-powered karts. Pleasant weather greeted racers for Friday practice, but Mother Nature had other ideas for race days with a steady rain moving into the area Saturday morning and staying for the remainder of the weekend.

The wet conditions made no difference for Maryland’s Hudson Brown, who made headlines all weekend on his pair of No. 021 Gold Karts powered and tuned by Snap Ya Neck Racing.

Entering the headline Senior Light and Senior Medium divisions, Brown met high expectations with a dominating performance. He’d sweep each division’s feature races both days, as well as capture pole awards in all qualifying rounds. In all, Brown wheeled his Gold Karts to four pole awards, five heat race wins, and four feature triumphs to take a commanding early lead in the CKNA East point standings.

“It’s incredibly humbling to work with Hudson,” SpASpeed principal George Vorrilas said. “What a talented driver – four for four on the weekend on the Snap Ya Neck Gold Kart. We’re so impressed.”

Senior Light —

In addition to Hudson, we had eight other drivers who battled hard in the challenging conditions.

New Jersey’s Emil Osman was a welcomed addition to the SpASpeed team. The 2023 CKNA North East Junior class champion made his first senior start on a new No. 15 Gold Kart. Entering the 28-kart Light division, Osman improved throughout the event as he adapted to the new chassis. He’d close out Sunday with his best run — a P5 result in the Light final — and he’ll carry positive momentum into the CKNA Summer Nationals at Pittsburgh in June.

Also in Light, Logan Hickman did a terrific job. After an up-and-down weekend, Hickman would start P23 in the Sunday final and advance to P8 in a fine drive.

Steve Masterson and Ben Safar also ran SpASpeed Gold Karts in Senior Light. Both drivers fought through the tough conditions and gained experience for future rounds.

Senior Medium —

Kloe McKenzie raced hard in her tough division and came away with a P11 finish both days in the Medium features.

Steve Masterson doubled up and ran both Light and Medium. He’d advance six positions in the Sunday heat race to finish 7th. He finished just outside the top 10 in each day’s feature.

Junior —

Trevor King and Connor Morse proudly carried the SpASpeed banner in the 26-kart Junior category.

A super competitive class with plenty of carnage, both King and Morse dealt with their fair share of obstacles. Both drivers did a great job. King had a good day going Saturday with a P12 qualifying effort and a P10 result in heat 1. After a p13 finish in heat 2, Trevor would unfortunately become involved in a lap 1 incident relegating him to a P23 finish. On Sunday, he’d advance four positions for a P20 finish in the final

Morse raced around the top 20 during most rounds, and Sunday he’d finish a few seconds back of King in P21. Connor’s best run came in Saturday heat 1, which saw him advance nine positions for a solid P15 finish.

Sportsman —

Jake Maloney had a great race Sunday, finishing P4 in the 14-lap Sportsman final. This drive was a terrific improvement from Saturday, which saw him finish P7. We’re looking forward to more progress from Jake in the coming races!

Keith McKenzie did an outstanding job all event keeping our team and equipment together and running as organized as possible in the difficult conditions. There were lots of wrecks and damage, and none of our drivers missed a single session. We stayed ahead of it, and I can’t thank everyone enough for an incredible effort,” Vorrilas added.

SpASpeed’s next major 206 event is the inaugural CKNA Summer Nationals June 21-23 at the challenging Pittsburgh International Race Complex kart track. This will be a huge crowd that any 4-cycle racer will not want to miss.
