SUMMIT POINT, W. Va. – WKC lifetime member and WKA Hall of Fame inductee Jack Foster, who passed away in June, was memorialized at Summit Point with the running of the Jack Foster Memorial Cup for Saturday’s Vintage USA and Vintage Euro classes. Foster, one of the founders of vintage-kart road racing more than 20 years ago, was an important figure at WKC races for decades. His South Jersey Road Runners team brought numerous people to Summit Point over the years and turned many of them into kart racers, whether it be for one weekend or several years.
The WKC local-option vintage classes, which had 19 racers in attendance Saturday, were Foster’s brainchild. He developed the class rules that WKC’s Vintage Euro, USA and Open divisions continue to utilize, which handicap the various engine packages with different weight breaks, exhaust and carburetor rules. WKC continues as one of the only organizations in the country that has a handicap-style rule set for vintage enduro karts.
This past weekend the Jack Foster Cup, which has been awarded annually to Vintage USA and Vintage Euro winners at Summit Point since 2004, saw Jack’s widow, Isabell Foster, preside over the 18th awarding to the class winners Ben Eberhart in Vintage Euro and Bill Anderson in Vintage USA.
Ben Ray Griffith made the presentation of one of Foster’s 1970 First Place trophies to Louie Magiera, winner of Saturday’s Vintage Open race. And over 125 racers, team members and family enjoyed a special dinner held in memory of Foster after racing concluded Saturday evening.
With round 5 at Summit Point complete, road racers around the country will now look to one of the biggest events of the year, the AKRA Road Race Nationals season closer September 24-26 at Pittsburgh Int’l Race Complex in Wampum, Pa. Around 150 racers have already pre-registered for the event, and we expect most classes to rival competition levels seen at Mid-Ohio in June, when over 900 race entries filled the pits.
Included in this year’s Pittsburgh Road Race National will be Friday’s Vintage Enduro Kart Celebration event. Scheduled to take place after practice Friday, the race is expected to attract more than 30 vintage enduro karts. Click here for more information.
