The following post is an official press release from Luttrell Racing / IONIC Edge Chassis:
CARTERSVILLE, Ga. – IONIC Edge Chassis racers enjoyed an impressive opening to the 2021 racing season February 6 at Bushnell Motorsports Park in Florida, the debut race for the new Cup Karts South series.
Chris Cline, Ronnie Klys, Carter Pryor, Riley Scott, Elijah Skaggs and Matt Skaggs all entered their IONIC Edge karts in competition at Bushnell. Cline and Matt Skaggs would race in Masters, Pryor and Klys in Junior, Elijah Skaggs in Senior Medium and Riley Scott in Senior Heavy.
“Bushnell served as a great start to the new season,” IONIC Edge Chassis founder and owner Kyle Luttrell stated. “All our drivers did well; Chris Cline continues to impress. Chris and his father BJ Cline just started racing again a few years ago. As a kid, Chris and his dad always raced together. Now they are able to do it again and they are doing it with great success. Everyone knows Chris is one of the racers to beat when the Masters class hits the track at any race he goes to.”
Cline continued his hot streak in Masters, scoring another feature win on his No. 1 Edge. Cline had to work hard for the victory; he qualified P3 and would finish P2 in heat one before settling in and winning both heat two and the 12-lap final. He’ll go down as the first-ever Masters feature winner in the Cup Karts South record books.
Matt Skaggs looked good on his Edge in Masters. The Tennessee racer was in the thick of the battle all day and would land on the podium in the final, finishing P3 in the 14-kart field.
Matt’s nephew Elijah Skaggs is now a senior competitor and he entered the event’s largest division, 206 Senior Medium. One of 20 drivers to take time in qualifying, Elijah was near the front of the pack in every round. He’d time sixth fastest in qualifying and finish P6 in heat one and P4 in heat two. While battling for fifth in the final laps of the final, Elijah and another driver made contact which slipped him back several spots in the final running order. He’d end up credited with a P13 finish after nearly earning a top five.
Bushnell was a big race for Riley Scott. The 17-year-old entered Senior Heavy and did all his own tuning for the first time alone at a national race. He did a good job, too, racing his No. 88 Edge to a fine podium finish in the 15-kart Heavy field. In a very competitive field, Scott never finished outside the top five in four rounds of competition – qualifying P5 and finishing P5 and P4 in the heats before landing on the podium in the final.
Two of the 12 Junior entrants were on IONIC Edge machines. Carter Pryor had a solid day and similar to Riley Scott in Heavy, he never finished outside the top five all day. Pryor raced his No. 0 Edge to fourth-place run in the final.
Ronnie Klys was the other Edge in Junior and he’d qualifying P9 but run into problems in the final and finish P12.
IONIC Edge will be well represented at Charlotte
The first-ever Cup Karts Spring Nationals March 5-7 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway kart track is shaping up to be a huge event and there will be plenty of IONIC Edge racers in attendance.
According to Kyle Luttrell, expected IONIC Edge entries include Jeff and Riley Scott, Matt and Elijah Skaggs, Chris Cline, Stile Biles, Alyx Smith, Jayelynn Kerr, Carter Pryor, Ronnie Klys, Cam and Jett Ebben and potentially more.
“We’re looking forward to the Spring Nationals at Charlotte,” Luttrell said. “We’ll have an awesome group of IONIC Edge racers in attendance, and as always we’ll be working hard to compete for race wins. We’re confident and I’m sure there will be a lot of competition in all the divisions.”
