Dart Kart, AKRA host successful 2024 Mid-Ohio Nationals

LEXINGTON, Ohio — The Dart Kart Club hosted another outstanding AKRA / Hoosier Kartsport Road Racing Nationals Fathers Day weekend at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

While we don’t have official word on total entry count, well over 200 drivers made the trip to Mid-Ohio this year for what’s become the largest annual road race karting event of the year. Race entries surpassed 700 to make for another huge crowd, and drivers raved about smoothness and speed of the newly repaved 15-turn, 2.25-mile course.

Yamaha Pipe enduro and CIK 125 Shifter were the largest classes, each with about 30 entries taking the green flags. Other formidable categories included 250 SuperKart, Unlimited, 125cc TaG and 100cc TaG (KA-100).

We wish Dan Chalk, Rex Pierce and Otto Vollmerhausen speedy recoveries. Each driver was involved in a red flag incident resulting in injury, but thankfully not overly serious. We hope to see each driver back at the track soon.

Nearly all of the 16 race groups between Saturday and Sunday ran full 30- or 45-minute distances. The only shortened races were the three where the red flag incidents occurred.

Friday’s practice featured five rounds of 8-minute warmup sessions and an extended sixth round at 12 minutes, giving racers plenty of opportunity to get their karts geared up for race days.

Weather was picture perfect each of the three days. Rain was predicted for Friday, but it never came. Skies remained clear all three days with temperatures mostly in the mid-80s.

Year-end awards from the 2023 AKRA series were handed out to qualified drivers throughout Saturday. Silver cups, Hoosier Kartsport merch and various gift certificates were included in the awards, and gift certificates were presented to about a dozen drivers Saturday afternoon from a random draw. Certificates were sponsored by Hoosier Kartsport, TS Racing, RLV Tuned Exhaust Products and Michigan Kart Supply.

Unofficial results can be view on Race Monitor. Official results will be posted soon on Speedhive.

The road racing community learned sad news Saturday morning when news spread of Championship Enduro Series promoter Dave Larson’s death from a motorcycle accident Friday. Larson’s CES was a partner of AKRA’s and Dart Kart’s for the last number of years, and we send our condolences to his family and friends. They’ll remain in our thoughts and prayers through this difficult time.

Next up for the Dart Kart and the AKRA / Hoosier Kartsport National Road Racing Series is a visit to the Northeast corner of the Buckeye State, July 19-21 at the 2-mile Nelson Ledges Road Course in Garrettsville, Ohio. Pre-registration for Nelson Ledges will open soon at dartkartclub.com.

AKRA thanks everyone who attended this year’s Mid-Ohio Nationals to make it another successful event for our organization and Dart Kart Club. We hope to see you at Nelson Ledges this July, Summit Point with WKC this August 23-25 and Pittsburgh International with Dart Kart this September 27-29.
